How to test water hardness before buying
A basic hardness result helps compare recommendations and size a system responsibly.
Use a useful unit
Hardness is commonly reported as parts per million (mg/L) or grains per gallon. Share the number, unit, water source, and sample location with providers.
Utility report versus home test
A municipal report describes the distribution system and may show a range. A current sample at your home can help an installer account for local conditions and confirm the sizing input.
Testing is not diagnosis
A hardness test measures hardness. It does not establish that water is unsafe or identify every possible contaminant. Private-well owners and anyone with a specific health concern should use appropriate certified testing and authoritative local guidance.
