Water softener vs. filter: different jobs
Choose treatment based on a defined problem, not a catch-all equipment label.
Softening targets hardness
Cation-exchange softeners reduce calcium and magnesium that cause hardness and scale. They regenerate with salt or potassium and use water during that process.
Filters target something else
Sediment, taste and odor, and specific contaminants require different treatment approaches. A filter is not automatically a softener, and a softener is not a universal contaminant-removal device.
Combination systems need justification
Ask which measured condition each component addresses, which certifications apply, what replacement schedule is required, and the total operating cost.
